What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is one of the most remarkable holistic mind-body health systems in the world and is believed to be over 5000 years old. Ayurveda is a combination of two words: AYUR and VEDA. In Sanskrit AYUR means life and VEDA means knowledge or science. Literally AYURVEDA means “The Science or Knowledge of Life”.

Ayurveda is a Vedic science of right living, diet and exercise. Ayurveda, the beautiful ancient natural healing method is based on harmonizing the body and the mind by restoring the balance of the TRIDOSHAS or three elements - VATA, PITA and KAPHA (Air, Fire & Water) - of which the body is made of. The balance of these three doshas is seen as an individual constitution (Prakriti) in terms of Ayurveda and is used as a basis for Ayurvedic healing. It covers all aspects of health and well-being – physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. With its unique understanding of individual constitution, Ayurveda provides each person with the knowledge of living in harmony with both nature and our higher consciousness.

Following in the footsteps of yoga, which already has a worldwide presence, Ayurveda is emerging today as one of the most important natural healing systems in the world.

Ayurveda and Yoga - The Sister Sciences

Yoga and Ayurveda are two closely related sacred sciences rooted in the Vedic tradition of India. Together, Ayurveda and Yoga create a complete discipline that can transform our whole being, from optimal physical and mental health to the deepest spiritual awareness of the soul. Both Yoga and Ayurveda share the same goal - Self-Realization, the highest form of Self-Healing. Ayurveda is the natural detoxifying and healing method of body and mind that shows us how to attain optimal health and sufficient energy. This in turn will provide a wholesome, strong and balanced foundation for yogic practice. The two sister sciences work together, complement each other and have always been used together throughout history. They are integral parts of the Vedic knowledge, guiding us towards harmony within us and with the whole Universe. Adding Yoga and Ayurveda to your daily life can award you with extraordinary vitality, well-being on all levels and thus immense inner joy and balance in life.

Your daily Ayurvedic treatments consist of Panchakarma (literally The five actions or treatments) treatments that purify your body from toxic materials left by disease or/and unhealthy lifestyle choices. With a doctor you will decide which detoxification treatments suit you best.

All this will offer you an immensely beautiful and rejuvenating experience, which can transform your whole life. You will not only clean your body, but also clear your mind and open your heart. We offer you spiritual and philosophical insight into mindful and Ayurvedic way of living.

Your Day on Ayurveda & Yoga Retreats

Mornings in our Rishikesh Ashram start with herbal tea and a cosy group chanting, that our students find challenging at first, but really start loving during their stay here. Chanting and especially group chanting creates strong uplifting and healing vibrations in and around us that will touch everyone’s soul.

After the chanting you will have a pranayama session. It consists of yogic breathing exercises or sinus cleansing procedure using a neti pot (depending on the day).

In the daytime you will have your detoxifying Ayurvedic treatments and time to rest or walk in the nature.

In the afternoon, after your nurturing treatments and spending quality time in our Rishikesh Yoga School’s beautiful surroundings, it’s time to attend yoga classes in order to support your body in the cleansing process. Our teachers will make sure that you have the right peace and supportive practice according to your treatment plan and energy levels. We have special sequence of asanas (yoga postures) for balancing different doshas (Vata, Pita and Kapha). In that way the yoga practice will immensely support your body in the purifying and balancing process. Our yoga classes are suitable for beginners as well as more advanced students. The classes are small and encouraging, with much adjusting and explanation of correct alignment.

After yoga practice it’s time to quiet the mind and relax the body with a meditation. It’s a perfect way to finish off the day as it makes your whole being lighter and more balanced.
